Rumormill: Volkswagen head (kinda) confirms new entry-level Porsche 356

The head of the Volkswagen Group, Martin Winterkorn, spoke with Autocar about the possibility of a new entry level Porsche model. Perhaps fancifully dubbed the 356, the new model would slot into Porsche's lineup below the Boxster and Cayman. In England, the new baby Porsche would cost about £33,000, which means nothing to us here in the U.S. and is about what a base Boxster costs. That said, the article mentions the possibility that the next generation Boxster and Cayman might go way up scale.

Big question: what would this new 356 be? Autocar speculates that the 356 will be based heavily on the mid-engine architecture of the upcoming Audi R4 and the conceptual Volkswagen Bluesport. We don't know if the 356 will be strictly a coupe or also be available as a roadster. In fact, we don't even know if the R4 will be coupe-only. We'd image the two cars will have similar, if not identical, body configurations. Though not the engine. In order to keep some brand DNA in the Porsche, the 356 will ship with a new forced-induction flat-four.

Those that remember the 944 Turbo S and the 968 know this is in no way a bad thing – except the 924 Turbo's engine was the EA831 inline-four originally intended for the Volkswagen Bus and Audi 100. It was never really any good, even in turbo form. The reborn 356's mill (most likely a turbo as opposed to supercharged) should be good for around 250 horsepower – very close to where the base Boxster/Cayman currently sits. Expect the 356 to get much better fuel economy, however.

The new 356 will share a transmission with the R4. Again, the 924, 944 and 968 shipped with a modified Audi 100 transmission acting as a transaxle, so there is precedence. As to what that transmission will be, we don't know but we'd guess a DSG of some sort. Audi's R4 should arrive sometime in 2011, with the Porsche 356 bowing in 2012. Is any of this going to actually, you know, happen? Magic 8-Ball says, "Ask again later."

Mercedes-Benz starts production of the SLS AMG at Sindelfingen

Mercedes-Benz kicked off production of the SLS AMG this week in preparation for its March 27 on-sale date in Europe, and unlike the SLR that was built in the UK by McLaren, the gull-wing SLS is rolling out of Mercedes' main Sindelfingen plant in Germany. Sindelfingen is handling the final assembly of the SLS with two other factories also contributing major elements to the build process.

The Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria is producing the aluminum bodyshell and chassis, which weighs in at just 531 pounds, while the technicians at the AMG shop in Affalterbach, Germany are hand building the 571 horsepower 6.3-liter V8 engine. Like many other high performance engines, each SLS engine is built and tested by a single technician. The SLS has been priced starting at €177,310 (approximately $250,000) in Germany including the value added tax (VAT), although U.S. pricing has yet to be disclosed.

Alfa Romeo prepares special-edition MiTo for Maserati dealer network

If you're dropping off a six-figure Italian exotic at the dealership for service, you expect to be loaned something special in return, right? That's why Fiat supplied Ferrari with a run of special-edition 500s for use in their European service network. (Heck, they even produced some for public consumption.) Now its classy kid sister is following suite with a special loaner car of its own.

Produced in a limited run of 100 units, these specially-prepared Alfa Romeo MiTos will be dispatched toMaserati dealers across Europe. Each is distinguished from the average MiTo by its Maserati Blu Oceano paint, special plaque on the center console and "Alfa Romeo for Maserati" sill plate. The special edition Alfa also comes equipped with top-of-the-range 170-horsepower, 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo engine, 18-inch wheels and rear spoiler, along with an interior decked out in sumptuous Pelle Frau leather and all the electronic bells and whistles on offer.

After Maserati gave Alfa the 8C Competizione, it's nice that Alfa – now under the same leadership as Maserati – can give a little something back. Details in the press release after the jump.

MV Agusta Perfezionata: Tamborini Corse T1 'perfects what already seems perfect'

Massimo Tamburini may have retired from his post as the head of Centro Ricerche Cagiva (CRC, a subsidiary of Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta) in December of 2008, but that hasn't stopped brand-new and exquisitely designed machines bearing his family name from rolling down the streets of Italy. One of the best of these customs may be the Tamborini Corse T1, which is the company's take on the naked MV Agusta Brutale.

Massimo's son Andrea is heading up the T1 effort, and Tamborini Corse offers restyling kits and hop-up parts for the the Brutale and F4 from MV Agusta as well as the Ducati 1198 superbike and naked Monster. We don't know yet what all goes into transforming a standard Brutale into a T1 or how much it costs to do so, but we see plenty of lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum bits hanging off the bike's stock chassis. NASCAR announces rule changes, ups excitement by adding danger, emotion

NASCAR severely curtailed and occasionally banned the on-track bump-n-grind because it didn't want drivers taking each other out and compromising the spectacle of good racing. At the same time, drivers were being fined and reprimanded for colorful outbursts and language. The aim was to keep the racing clean and the sponsors happy, but while it might have worked for the corporate backers, the fans, the drivers and the racing were all suffering.

That was so 2009. In 2010 drivers won't have to be "robotic sponsor shills too frightened to make waves," and trading paint is back on the menu. Said the series' VP of competition, when it comes to bumping the overseers "will put it back in the hands of drivers, and we will say 'Boys, have at it and have a good time,'" and drivers will be allowed a greater degree of personal expression. The new, looser NASCAR just wants competitors to keep things "within reason," and we have a feeling drivers will be exploring those boundaries pretty quickly.

The cars are also coming in for revisions, with a rear spoiler setup eventually replacing the current rear wing. The goal is to improve downforce and the look of the car. Will all of this improve the racing? It can't hurt, because when it comes to NASCAR, how can you even call it racing if there's no rubbing?

Brabus GL 63 Biturbo picks up where Mercedes AMG leaves off

The performance boffins over at AMG keep themselves pretty busy, churning out high-output versions of just about every vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. Just about, but not quite. For example, if you want a GL-Class family-hauler with the division's stonking 6.3-liter V8 engine, you're SOL. But that's where the aftermarket comes in, and Brabus has arrived at the scene to save the day. And then some.

Not only has Brabus fitted the 6.3-liter V8 to the GL, but they've bolted a pair of turbochargers in the process. And while they were at it, they tweaked the seven-speed auto-box, fitted a big water-to-air intercooler and upgraded the intake, exhaust, brakes, suspension and rolling stock. The result? 650 horsepower and nearly as much torque. That oughta be good for 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour) and hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds along the way.

The Widestar body kit also widens the vehicle's stance, while the interior has been tricked out in custom leather, carbon fiber trim and LCD screens aplenty to keep the kids busy while you focus on maximum velocity. The super-truck will be unveiled in a couple of months at the Geneva Motor Show, but is available for order now from €368,000 ($518k). Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.
